COOK's Doors And Windows

What’s Hot (and Cool) in Energy Efficiency?

Installing Energy Efficient doors and windows can help reduce your energy costs and save you money. These doors and window are made from special glass designed to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Understanding some common terms will help you select the right windows and doors for your home.

U-factor is the rate of heat loss measured through the glass or the entire window. The lower the U-factor, the better a product insulates. Low U-factor doors and windows help keep your house warm and your heating bills low.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much heat a window allows in. The lower the SHGC, the better the product is at blocking the sun’s heat. Low SHGC windows and doors help keep your house cool in summer and can reduce air conditioning costs.

R-value measures insulation and resistance to heat flow and is more commonly associated with home insulation. For windows and doors, U-factor and SHGC are more important measurements.

Low-E coating is a thin metallic layer used on the inside glass surface to reduce U-factor and SHGC. Used in multiple layers, Low-E coatings reflect or absorb the sun’s heat and damaging UV rays.

Energy Panel is a removable, exterior glass panel designed to cover the outside of existing windows. Energy panels offer added energy efficiency for wood windows with single glazing.
